Do you ever wonder how Ancient people used to pass down religious texts and massive poems and stories…
…without a printing press?
At the same time… we can’t seem to remember what we did last week. What gives?
It is interesting if you think about it, and it certainly seems ancient people had a better memory than us.
But the truth is…
These people had a very well-known system to memorize and pass down stuff. That system was unfortunately lost around 1600 AD for some reason.
Luckily for us, it made a comeback in the last 100 years.
Here’s what it is.
This ancient method was written by Cicero about 2,000 years ago in his writings ‘Ad Herennium’.
Turns out, you could remember just about anything by visualizing it around a room!
Just check this out:
Look at your shoes right now…imagine they're covered in molten mercury, burning your feet!
Look at your oven right now…now imagine it’s burning hot like Venus!
Look at your floor right now…now imagine you're walking on rich, fertile soil, like Earth!
Look at your couch right now…imagine you're standing on it, jumping as high as you can, but you fall off and land on the hard ground of Mars!
Look at your bedside lamp right now…imagine it’s glowing like the biggest planet, Jupiter, with colorful rings spinning around it.
Look at your plant right now…imagine it’s growing bigger and taller, like the giant rings of Saturn.
Look at your mirror right now…now imagine cold, blue ice is covering it, like Uranus.
Look at your TV right now…imagine it's flickering with a dark storm like the winds of Neptune.
Now assuming you actually took the time to imagine these and you didn’t just skimmed them over, I could ask you:
- What was burning your shoes?
- What was happening in your oven?
- What was on the floor that were you walking on?
- What planet did you land on after jumping from your couch?
- What did your lamp remind you of?
- What was covering your mirror?
- What storm was on your TV?
You should be able to say…
- Mercury
- Venus
- Earth
- Mars
- Jupiter
- Saturn
- Uranus
- Neptune
Congrats! You've just memorized the order of the planets.
If you didn’t get it the first time, try reading it again. I gave you a more complex example, but you understand the gist of it.
You can use this method for ANYTHING. Literally anything.
Obviously, you have to choose the objects in your room according to how they’re organized. So for each person this will be different.
Try this exercise, let me know how it goes.
